Organize: Theirs and Ours - 5 Great Ideas for Tidying Up Your Closet(s)

"Peace Out Homies"

What do we mean? Distinguish clothing and shoes that you don't wear and items that you need to get rid of. You can do this by the golden rule of closet organizing: If you haven’t worn it in a year, toss it. We'll focus more on this later in the week as we're actually placing a numerical number on the amount of items we're going to remove from our home in early 2011...makin' room for some new goodies!

"Shut the Front Door"

What do we mean? Don't discount all that great real estate located on the back of your closet door. Hang a shoe rack and put your most commonly worn pairs in quick grabbing territory. Not shoe obsessed like moi? Place numerous hooks to hang bags, belts, hoodies or ties.

"Sweat the Small Stuff"

What do we mean? Too often we find ourselves hanging our sweaters and taking up coveted hanging space. Here in Austin, we only don sweaters for 1/3 - 1/4 of the year so it's silly to have them taking up all that year round wardrobe space. Sweaters are best kept folded and if you don't have room in your closet, another great option are sweater boxes and slide easily under your bed.

"Reason for the Season"

What do we mean? Again, don't overload your closet with seasonal duds. Make a coat closet or coat rack if you reside in cooler temps or create a mudroom-esque area if you're in a rainy area. Get our drift? And if you're like us, and have a mass amount of clothing and extra closet space (yes, we love it) then move your seasonal goodies to a spare closet to free up space in your main closet.

Our linen closet

"Between the Sheets"

What do we mean? Show them some lovin' too and yes, we obviously need some serious work in this area...eeek! Store folded sets of bed linens inside one of the set’s pillowcases and group same-size sheet sets together on shelves. Use easy-to-attach tags to mark the edge of the shelf with sheet sizes. Also think about throwing out, recycling or using as rags, old stained towels and sheet sets. Tell yourself that by February 28th you'll invest in two new 5-piece sets of towels if you haven't splurged on new ones in two years or more.

We hope some of these pointers helped you out with your 'spring cleaning!' If you have any awesome ideas for tidying up closets in your home, please share that info with us! Stay tuned, we'll be featuring a great post later this week about our total donated items count for 2011. We're shooting high and realize we have numerous goodies we need to rid ourselves of. So join in the fun for 2011 Challenge de Purge!
